☆ 'Dune: Part Two' looks to end box office drought with $80 million opening

Since the start of the year, the domestic box office has tallied just $866.4 million in ticket sales through Sunday, a nearly 18% drop from the same period in 2023, according to data from Comscore. A boost at the beginning of the year could prove critical to a box office that's still struggling to reclaim $10 billion in domestic annual ticket sales, a mark last seen before the Covid pandemic. While surprise hits like Sony's "Anyone But You" alongside Paramount's "Mean Girls" and "Bob Marley: One Love" have helped fill cinemas, the box office had few blockbuster holdovers from the holidays and limited new offerings in the new year. Last year, the first quarter was buoyed by $263 million in ticket sales from Disney's "Avatar: The Way of Water," which hit theaters in December of the previous year. Similarly, 2022 had more than $200 million in residual sales from Sony and Marvel's 2021 hit "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

CNN —Donald Trump has paid $392,000 to The New York Times to cover the legal costs from his failed lawsuit against the newspaper and its journalists over a 2018 investigation into his finances that included confidential tax records, a spokesman for the Times told CNN on Monday. Trump was ordered to pay the money in January, more than eight months after Judge Robert R. Reed granted the Times’ motion to dismiss the case against it and its journalists, concluding the journalists’ conduct was protected by the New York Constitution. The reporting series, authored by David Barstow, Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner, went on to win the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting. A spokesman for the Times on Monday called the anti-SLAPP statute a “powerful force for protecting press freedom.”“This decision shows that the state’s newly amended anti-SLAPP statute can be a powerful force for protecting press freedom,” Times spokesman Charlie Stadtlander said in a statement. “The court has sent a message to those who want to misuse the judicial system to try to silence journalists.”CNN has reached out to representatives for Trump for comment.

CNN —Hilary has weakened to a post-tropical cyclone that’s still bringing life-threatening flooding and gusty winds to much of the Southwest US, leaving streets like raging rivers and residents ordered to leave their homes. “Areas that normally do not experience flash flooding will flood,” the National Weather Service said. Strong and gusty winds are expected to persist across portions of the western US Monday, particularly in and near areas of higher terrain. Cars were stuck in floodwaters in the Spanish Hills area, the National Weather Service reported. The Los Angeles Unified School District – the nation’s second largest school district – will be closed Monday because of the storm.

CNN —Using a long-shot “shout” maneuver, the Voyager mission team at NASA has reestablished communication with Voyager 2 after losing contact with the spacecraft, which has been operating for nearly 46 years. Commands sent to Voyager 2 on July 21 accidentally caused the spacecraft’s antenna to point 2 degrees away from Earth. One radio antenna is located at Goldstone near Barstow, California, the second near Madrid, and the third near Canberra, Australia. It’s not the first time that the aging twin probes — Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, both launched in 1977 — have experienced issues. Voyager 1, which is nearly 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, continues to operate as expected and communicate with the Deep Space Network.

CNN —The Voyager mission team at NASA has been able to detect a signal from Voyager 2 after losing contact with the spacecraft, which has been operating for nearly 46 years. One radio antenna is located at Goldstone near Barstow, California, the second near Madrid, and the third near Canberra, Australia. “We are now generating a new command to attempt to point the spacecraft antenna toward Earth,” Dodd said. Along the way, both Voyager 1 and 2 have encountered unexpected issues and dropouts, including a seven-month period where Voyager 2 and the Deep Space Network couldn’t communicate in 2020. Meanwhile, Voyager 1, which is nearly 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, continues to operate as expected and communicate with the Deep Space Network.

A New York judge dismissed Donald Trump's 2021 lawsuit against The New York Times on Wednesday and ordered the former president to pay attorneys' fees for the paper and three of its journalists who are listed as defendants. Reed's ruling comes as a defeat for Trump, who filed the $100 million lawsuit in 2021 against the Times, his estranged niece Mary Trump and others. "The New York Times is pleased with the judge's decision today. While Wednesday's ruling dismisses the claims against the Times and its journalists, a ruling has not yet been rendered about Mary Trump, who has also filed a motion to dismiss. Neither did a lawyer for Mary Trump.
